Remembering Betty

Betty Booth 1940 – 2024
We remember our treasured friend and mentor, Betty, who has been such an important part of our family, and our business, for many, many years.

For Betty weaving was a way of life. She was awarded the NZ Spinning, Weaving and Woolcraft Society’s Quality Mark for Weaving. She tutored for almost forty years. Her knowledge of all looms, in particular the multi shaft looms, and techniques, specialising in weaving fine linen, was extraordinary.
She was a founding member of the Professional Weavers Network, which was formed in 1991 by a group dedicated to promoting excellence in the art of weaving and art textiles. Betty’s linen, hand towels, wall hangings and table linen can be found in homes in NZ, Japan, and USA.

Betty was an important part of Kate’s weaving journey. As a mentor, she not only inspired Kate but also shaped her teaching approach. Betty’s exceptional way of explaining concepts, her patient guidance, and her ability to offer new perspectives left a lasting impact. Her influence continues to resonate in the way Kate now teaches weaving, reflecting the lessons she learned from Betty’s wisdom and generosity.

Betty featured many times in our Wheel magazine and in the latest issue, which featured the best articles from the previous 35 years, of course Betty featured with a master class in twill.
A warm and encouraging teacher, she opened the door to the wonderful world of textiles to many young and old.

Her technical expertise was such that we often approached her for advice regarding the design of our loom range. She was extensively involved in the testing of the Katie Loom, an eight shaft travelling loom. And as recently as 2024, Betty gave her advice regarding our new shuttle race.

When Betty retired, she gave all her looms to her granddaughter Christina. Betty was thrilled to see Chrsitina and her five-year-old daughter Sara, carry on the hand weaving tradition.
Betty adored her family and she and Graeme were a great team. Thank you, Graeme, for all your help over the years carrying and warping looms.
Our love and condolences to Graeme and all the family. You are all in our thoughts as are our special and loving memories of dear Betty.
