Sewing a French Seam by Hand Using navy yarn, hand sew the fabric length into a continuous loop with a French seam (shown below in a contrasting pink thread).
Fold fabric in half lengthways, aligning the short waste yarn edges. Hemstitch through both layers.
Bring the needle under 3 threads. Backstitch, but this time bring it up 3 picks into the weaving. Repeat across.
Cut away excess fabric close to the hemstitching and gently pull away any loose threads.
Press seam to one side. Fold the cowl inside out. Press again.
Back stitch approximately 1cm away from the folded edge. This hides the hemstitched raw edged seam inside.
Lay flat. Press and secure seam flap to the main fabric using whip stitch.
