Ashford Wheels and Looms – the global leader in the manufacture of quality spinning wheels, weaving looms and textile equipment – is celebrating 90 years in business.
We are excited to celebrate 90 years of serving the textile and fibre communities around the world. From humble beginnings of one man in a washhouse to a 3,300 square metre (33,00sq ft) factory employing 45 staff.
It is an incredible milestone to reach, for a third-generation family owned business, made possible by the support of our dealers, distributors, teachers and textile artists around the world.
Over all these years we have been proud to see our products in use as a hobby, for education, as a way of living sustainably, or helping people utilise their traditional skills and local resources.
We get great pleasure seeing the wonderful world of the fibre arts made accessible to all through our products.
Since 1934 a lot has happened in the world, but also in our company. We have expanded, evolved, introduced new products due to popular demand, and installed safer computerised machinery. But some things never change, the values of Walter Ashford, who founded the company, still underpin what we do today and continue to offer affordable, well-made and designed products.
A milestone like a 90th birthday is cause for reflection on values, memories, and defining moments like when Walter made his first spinning wheel in 1940, Richard appointing our first overseas’ distributor Straw Into Gold in the USA in 1978, Walter being awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in 1986 for his services to the community and to business, Elizabeth Ashford prints the first copy of The Wheel magazine in 1987, and James Ashford (third generation) and his husband David, joining in the business in 2015.
We want to celebrate the company’s rich history by giving away an Elizabeth 30-inch spinning wheel. Originally designed and made for Richard’s wife Elizabeth, the wheel is a stunning spinning wheel in looks and performance. See below how to win one of these beautiful wheels.
